I was referring to the shift pattern of Three on the Tree and how the same pattern was used on the 3 speed floor shifter.

I drove a Beetle with a four speed cross country from New York to California. Shift pattern was 1st upper left, 2nd was strait down, 3rd was upper right with 4th strait down. Reverse was lockout FAR right and down. Then there was a semi-automatic I drove to college. It was a two speed. First or "low" was good tho 35-40 miles per hour (or the engine was screaming for mercy) the pull the shifter strait back (down) for second "high". No idea what the top speed was of this Beetle was. The rest of the Volkswagens I drove were full automatic 4 or 5 speed.
