Defence lawyers for senior Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou, have asked Canada's foreign affairs minister to stop the extradition process against their client, saying the demand made by the United States was for political purposes, not legitimate law enforcement reasons.

By request of the USA, Menzou was arrested in Canada last December, and the USA wants her extradited to face a 'fraud' trial there for alleged conduct that would not be an offence in Canada.

I agree with her lawyers - Meng Wanzhou should be returned to China. Unlike the USA, Canada is under no obligation to be in lock-step with the foreign policy of a foreign nation. And it is particularly important for us to withhold support for any more of the USA's senseless provocations around the World.

"for alleged conduct that would not be an offence in Canada."

Taking politics out of the equation, as a point of law, you are correct.

The irony is, we could have avoided this whole mess by simply either denying her entry, or suggesting to her that she should withdraw her request to enter, and letting her get on a plane back to China. We could then quite rightfully say to the US sorry, she never entered Canada, so we had no legal standing to detain her. I know thats kind of devious, but we're dealing with Trump here, so, as the saying goes, fuck 'em.

Well it sure isn't any more devious than the mess we've gotten ourselves into.

This shouldn't involve us at all - she may very well be guilty (apparently she found a way to do business which contravened the US sanctions against Iran, and you know the rest.) But it's not our business, and I did read something recently which claimed that President Trump is getting sick of the situation as well.

But meanwhile and fyi - she's living a nice life out there in Vancouver !

[IMG] ... that's about $13M, and she bought it.
She and her husband live there, nice neighbourhood. [IMG]

" The new home, in the tony Shaughnessy neighbourhood, is larger and enclosed, allowing her paid bail monitors “to carry out their duties more effectively and fully within the gated property,” Martin said. (Acres of gated property.)

And get this : " She’ll be just two doors down from the U.S. consul general’s residence, where the star-spangled banner flaps on the front lawn. " You can't make this stuff up.

Check it out - that's one nice scarf she's wearing there ... and that purse ... [IMG]

We treat our prisoners well up here, none of those orange jumpsuit rags - soooo tacky ! [IMG]

Nice pad, but that's pocket change for her.

Hon, this whole thing is so bizarre, but thankfully it's putting a mirror to the absurd hypocrisy of the matter.

China has every right to be pissed off with us - we're detaining their citizen, at her expense, while we wait to see if the USA will show some common sense for once.

Meanwhile the USA is making phone calls overseas, to see if it's okay with their crazy girlfriend if this affront to the sanctity of AIPAC's sanctions can be be overlooked !
